Pouring concrete floor

The floor is poured after the footings and walls have been constructed.

An underlayment of 4-6 inches of gravel is used to once again encourage water to run away from the floor and instead down into the ground. Concrete is hydrostatic--it attracts moisture-- which is just what we do not want it to do. So we must take steps to ensure that water will be repelled. As with the exterior walls, we use a 5-mil-thick polyethylene to form a water barrier under the floor.

The basement floor is typically a 4"-thick slab.
