Construct Roof Deck

We have already seen how the trusses, which are the
skeleton of the roof, go up. The next stage in the roof construction is the
decking. Building the deck usually consists of simply nailing 4x8 sheets of
OSB to the trusses. The decking gives the roof
structural integrity, and also gives us a flat, smooth surface
to which we can attach the shingles.
After the decking, we attach felt paper, which helps form a waterproof barrier. The final step is attaching shingles. Although roofs may be constructed from a variety of materials-- including metal, slate, wood, or rubber--most houses today use conventional shingles, which are created from asphalt and a fiberglass mesh. Asphalt shingles usually have a 25-year lifespan. At Ashley Homes, we use dimensional shingles, supplied by major manufacturers such as Owens-Corning or GAF. Dimensional shingles employ layers laminated together in a random pattern, yielding a dimensional or shake-like appearance. |
