The sill plate, as you can see in the accompanying photo,
runs the length of the top of the basement concrete walls.
It is the first piece of wood we've met so far in the construction
process.
The sill plate is attached to the concrete via robust bolts or straps which stick up out of the basement walls; these bolts have been installed every 6 feet. Before the sill plates (which are ACQ-treated, to resist moisture) are installed on top of the basement walls, we apply a Styrofoam sill seal that goes between the basement walls and the plates. This ensures a gap-free and air-tight fit between wood and concrete. |
